New! Census 2000 data by planning district

Wilder Research Center recently received Census 2000 data divided into St. Paul neighborhood boundaries. You may download the data in Excel or shapefile (GIS) format, or view easy-to-read summaries.

What is this data? How does it differ from what's in the Wilder's community profiles?

This information comes directly from the 2000 census. What is new is the boundaries that match St. Paul's planning districts.

The Census Bureau releases data at different levels of geography. The census data in our community profiles - including information on age and race - was released at the block level. It is fairly easy to match blocks to planning districts, so we were able to use this information in our community profiles. On the other hand, information on issues such as poverty and employment was released only for larger areas of geography. These areas did not match with planning district boundaries.

In order to have accurate and consistent planning district census data, the City of St. Paul and Wilder Research Center asked the Census Bureau to run a special tabulation of 2000 Census data to match St. Paul's planning district and sub-planning district boundaries.

What levels are available?

  • Planning districts - St. Paul's 17 planning districts
  • Sub-planning district areas - A smaller area than planning district. There are approximately eighty in St. Paul.

Do you have this information for Minneapolis neighborhoods?

At the present time, only St. Paul neighborhood data is available on our website.

Minneapolis neighborhood boundaries closely match census block groups, so it is possible to aggregate data for most neighborhoods from existing census information. For help locating Minneapolis community data, contact our helpline or the Urban Coalition's Census Information Clearinghouse. Online sources for Minneapolis neighborhood data include the City of Minneapolis and the Data Doorway.

Is neighborhood census data available for previous years?

Wilder Research Center has neighborhood data in printed format only for 1990 and 1980. Unfortunately, the print is too small to scan for electronic publication. By request, our helpline will mail copies of this information.

You can choose Excel spreadsheets or shapefiles for GIS software. The data are organized into four parts (worksheets for the Excel files, files for the shapefiles).

Planning district: Shapefile | Excel

Sub-planning district: Shapefile | Excel

Data Notes:
What the tables contain: DP-1 covers basic demographic data. DP-2 includes information about education, ancestry, and citizenship. DP-3 includes employment, income, and poverty statistics. DP-4 focuses on housing characteristics.
